enable, configure wpcleaner[संपादन]

Mass deletion of files or mass cleanup of files[संपादन]

Hi! I made a post 10 years ago at विकिपीडिया:आंतरविकि_दूतावास/जुनी_चर्चा_१#चित्र:Anjanerikilla.jpg that all files need a license. The reply was that

"Marathi Language Wikipedia comunity has clear understanding that we do not entertain request from Non Marathi language wikipedians in such respect unless required by Wikimedia Foundations direct intervention"

Is that still the opinion on mr.wiki?

If it is then it is a clear violation of wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy to allow non-licensed files.

I hope you will help clean up files. For example

  • Send messages to the users that is still active.
  • Look through Special:UnusedFiles and delete files with no license (or non-free files)
  • Use a bot to add a license (if uploader make a clear statement about source and license)

If central intervention is still required I will make a suggestio on meta to make a central mass deletion of files on mr.wiki.

  • @MGA73: Hello. Thanks for the message, and apologies for the delayed response. Even though I am active on Wikipedia every day, I somehow missed your first post. I am not sure what you mean by "Would anyone like to help save the remaining 17300 files?" If the files do not have licences, there's not much we can do. Encouraging uninvolved editors to update licenses may inadvertently result in license laundering. All the files are hosted on Wikimedia's servers in US, so legally speaking the files come under American copyright laws. Even if we assume Indian copyright laws are applicable, even then non-public domain files, and the ones without appropriate licenses should be deleted. But given the large number of files, I think this should be discussed with wider audience. Maybe sending mass message to all recently active editors, and having a discussion at Marathi village pump would be a good start. —usernamekiran (talk) २२:४२, २० मार्च २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]
  • @Usernamekiran: Thanks a lot for your reply. I agree that license laundering is to be avoided. What could be done is to send messages to uploaders and ask them to clarify if they are the photographers or not and if they is they can add a license. If the file shows a photo that is old enough it could be PD due to age. If a file is a modification of a file from Commons/Wikipedia then the file could probably be licensed the same way as the original. If the file is non-free then it could perhaps be used as fair use if a relevant rationale can be provided.
It will be a big work unless it is decided simply to mass delete all files without a license. But it could be done in steps. For exampe files in विशेष:न_वापरलेली_चित्रे is not in use so it will not be a very big loss if they are deleted. But we could also try to find out if any of the big uploaders are still active so they get a chance to add a source and license.

Similar to Usernamekiran, I missed this message as well. I think it's a fair ask to verify licensing. IIRC, a whole lot of these files were added when a few users did a SD-card dump on here. Starting with a central message and following up with specific users seems to be a prudent two-pronged approach. It might be a good idea to have someone with a bot to add:

@MGA73: Thank you. I sampled some images uploaded by Priya Hiregange, all the sampled images had meta-data, so it is safe to assume that the files were created by Priya Hiregange. Maybe can assume that all the image files with proper metadata are user-created and add a "CC BY-SA 4.0" to these files? @Usernamekiran: I also think that it is very likely it is own work. But I do not think adding licenses for uploaders is a good idea. There could be exceptions. For example if we get a user to write a message on their talk page "Yes they are my work and I agree to cc-by-sa-4.0". So I think it would be better to try sending an email first and ask for a license.
On some wikis licenses have been added if मिडियाविकी:Uploadtext or whatever user saw during upload had a statement like "By uploading your file you agree to release the file as cc-by-sa-3.0". --MGA73 (चर्चा) ११:३५, २३ मार्च २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]

  1. Create a template like oc:Modèl:No license and add that to all files that do not have a license
  2. Add categories like "Files uploaded by <user xx>" to the files (you could start with the top 10 or 20 uploaders)
  3. Add {{Information}} on the files unless they have one (not on the non-free files)
  4. Leave a notice on the user talk pages with a message that "You have uploaded one or more files without a license. Please add one or the file will be deleted." or "You have uploaded one or more files with a free license. Please help check that it has a good source and author."

What does the word "क्रिकॉमन्स" mean? I think that साचा:क्रिकॉमन्स should be replaced by standard templates like

Hi @Usernamekiran:! I noticed that on चित्र:! flower 18.jpg there is what seems to be a template that was substed. I have seen other examples. Parhaps you can use your bot to find such cases and converte them to a real template?
You asked earlier about metadata and there is an example on https://quarry.wmcloud.org/query/66549 where I made a list of files and their metadata. But you have to experiment a bit to find out how to look for the right metadata. It seems that there are 29 users that uploaded more than 50 unlicensed files each. The remaining 1090 files were uploaded by 200 different users. So if we put the files of the 29 biggest users in separate categories and the rest of the files in categories of ~100 files in each we will have 40 categories to check/fix/delete.
For example "Files to delete om May 1", "Files to delete on May 2"... "Files to delete on June 10". I think it is easier to handle if there are are not 17,000 files in one category.
Priya Hiregange uploaded 7,380 files and बहिर्जी नाईक uploaded 1,048 files. If the files look like own work there is not much we can do to save the files unless uploader post a message with a license.
If there are some uploaders that uploaded old photos then they might be PD due to age. And if the files were copied from other wikis then it may be possible to save the files. That could take some time.
In case someone would like to try to save the files but can't do it in time, then we could have a "Files to delete - on pause". Then any user can change "Files to delete on May x" to "Files to delete - on pause" and then we wait a little longer to delete the file (for example 2 weeks). --MGA73 (चर्चा) १९:४७, ६ एप्रिल २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]

Non free content policy[संपादन]

Hi @Usernamekiran:! I noticed that mr.wiki is not listed on m:Non-free content as a wiki that allow fair use. But there is विकिपीडिया:अ-मुक्त सामग्री निकष and विकिपीडिया:मराठी विकिपीडिया संचिका परवाना नीती. So I'm not sure if mr. wiki allow non-free content or not. wmf:Resolution:Licensing_policy is very clear: No non-free content unless there is a an Exemption Doctrine Policy (EDP).
If mr.wiki have no EDP then it is much easer to clean up because then all non-free files should just be deleted. That would also make it much easier to clean up files without a license because most files should simply be deleted. --MGA73 (चर्चा) १९:३०, १७ एप्रिल २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]

अभय नातू thank you. I think perhaps mr.wiki should discuss it and either chose to make an EDP or to chose not to allow non-free files. It is not a good solution to keep the status/policy unclear. @Usernamekiran, अभय नातू, Tiven2240, आणि संतोष गोरे: Looking at विकिपीडिया:अ-मुक्त सामग्री निकष it seems that there is no debate there. I think that it is a clear sign that there are no users that have a strong wish to allow fair use on mr.wiki. Since there are only 391 files in वर्ग:All non-free media it will only affect a few articles if all files are deleted.

But it will make it much easier to clean up files without a license because most of them have to be deleted because uploaders are no longer active.

If someone gives my bot a flag विकिपीडिया:सांगकाम्या/विनंत्या#सदस्य:MGA73bot I can help sort files in categories by uploader or by used/unused etc. Or if you prefer I can also just add the files to a list and you can mass delete files. --MGA73 (चर्चा) ०१:५३, २७ मे २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]

I have listed 7346 files on सदस्य:MGA73/Sandbox that were all taken by User:Priya Hiregange but are without a license and not in use.

Since the user is no longer active it is not possible to save the files because only photographer can add a license. The files are not in use so if deleted the files will not leave red links in any articles. So I suggest that the files are all deleted.

सदस्य:Tiven2240 you have deleted some files recently so I ping you as info.

If you prefer I can add {{No license}}, {{Oprhan file}} and Category:Files uploaded by Priya Hiregange to the files but I was thinking that since there were so many I made a special list instead of adding templates etc. --MGA73 (चर्चा) ००:१२, २८ मे २०२३ (IST)Reply[reply]

Let's add this template {{पानकाढा|कारण=अप्रताधिकारित चित्र}} to the page, as a callout of last resort, to these pages and leave it on for 7 days.
At the end of the period (after midnight June 4th, UTC), remove these files.

I think we can do something similar to all uploaders where there is a chance that they are still active. If some of them do not speak English I need someone help write a message.

If user is long gone then I think we should just tag for deletion like with the files of Priya Hiregange. But I will not add more files for deletion untill the 7 days have passed and the files of Priya Hiregange are deleted.
