भारत देश जगभरातील बहुसंख्येने पालन केल्या जाणाऱ्या हिंदू, बौद्ध, जैन आणि शीख या चार धर्मांचे उगमस्थान आहे.
भारतीय इतिहासामध्ये धर्म हा देशाच्या संस्कृतीमधील एक महत्त्वाचा भाग आहे. कायदा व रितींच्या आधारे भारतामधे धार्मिक विविधता व धार्मिक सहिष्णुता या दोन्ही गोष्टी जपल्या जातात. जवळजवळ ९३% भारतीय आपापल्या धर्माचे पालन करताना आढळतात.
२०११ च्या जनगणनेनुसार, भारतामधील ७९% लोक हिंदू धर्माचे पालन करतात. त्याखालोखाल इस्लाम धर्माचे अनुयायी १४%, ख्रिश्चन धर्म मानणारे २.३%, शीख धर्मिय १.९%, बौद्ध ०.७% व जैन धर्मिय ०.४% आहेत. या व्यतिरिक्त इतर धर्म व प्रथांचे पालन करणाऱ्या नागरीकांचं प्रमाण ०.६% आहे. काही अभ्यासक आणि विद्वानांच्या मते भारताच्या लोकसंख्येत ५.५ ते ६% बौद्ध धर्मीय आहेत. धार्मिक विविधतेमुळेच आज भारतामधे अनेक धर्म व सामाजिक एकीकरण पाहावयास आढळते. यातील काही धर्म भारतात आलेले व्यापारी, प्रवासी अप्रवासी, आक्रमणकर्ते व राज्यकर्ते यांच्याकरवी प्रचार केले गेलेले आहेत.
झोराष्ट्रीयन व यहूदी धर्मांचाही भारताशी निगडीत असा प्राचीन इतिहास आहे व या धर्मांचे पालनकर्तेदेखील काही हजारांच्या संख्येत आजही भारतात आढळतात. बहाई व झोराष्ट्रीयन धर्माची जगभरातील सर्वात मोठी लोकवस्ती भारतातच आढळते. अनेक जागतिक धर्मांची भारतीय अध्यात्माशी नाळ जोडली गेलेली आहे. उदा. बहाई धर्मियांना अशा विश्वास आहे की बुद्ध व कृष्ण हे सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वराचंच रूप आहेत.
योग, ध्यान, आयुर्वेद चिकित्सा, होरा, कर्म व पुनर्जन्म या सारखे हिंदू व बौद्ध धर्माच्या तत्त्वज्ञानाशी निगडीत असलेले अनेक पैलू धर्मप्रचारकांनी पाश्चिमत्य देशांमधे लोकप्रिय केले आहेत. जगभरामधे हिंदू धर्माचा लक्षणीय असा प्रभाव पडलेला आहे. हरे कृष्णा चळवळ, ब्रह्मकुमारी, आनंद मार्ग अशा अनेक संस्था भारतीय अध्यात्मिक विचारांचे प्रवर्तन करत असतात.
भारतामधील मुसलमानांची लोकसंख्या ही जगातील तिसरी सर्वात मोठी मुस्लीम लोकसंख्या आहे. भारतामधे जगातील तिसरी सर्वात मोठी शिया मुसलमानांची लोकसंख्यादेखील भारतामधेच आहे. मोईनुद्दीन चिस्ती व निझामुद्दीन अवलिया या प्रसिद्ध सुफी संतांचे दर्गे भारतामधे आहेत, जेथे जगभरामधून यात्रेकरू येतात. ताजमहाल व कुतुब मिनार या इस्लामी स्थापत्याचा नमुना असलेल्या वास्तूदेखील भारतात आहेत.
