नमस्कार मंडळी,

विकिपीडिया हा मुक्तकोश असल्याने बरेच वेळा येथे निर्हेतुकपणे वा क्वचित जाणूनबूजूनही चुकीची माहिती लिहिली जाते. अर्थात संपादक या नात्याने त्या चुकांना शुद्ध करण्याची जबाबदारी आपली (व प्रबंधक या नात्याने तर थोडी अधिकच माझी व इतर सहप्रबंधकांची) आहे. ते शक्यतो साध्य देखील केले जात आहे. परंतु जुन्या सगळ्याच बदलांचा इतिहास विकिवर राहात असल्याने असे झालेले चुकीचे बदल व नंतर त्यांची झालेली शुद्धी ह्यांच्या इत्यंभूत नोंदी जतन केल्या जातात. प्रसंगी वादाच्या मुद्द्यांवर काम होताना पूर्वी चुकीच्या वाटलेल्या गोष्टी नंतर योग्य आढळ्यास पुनर्स्थापित करण्यास या सोयीची खचितच मदत होते. परंतु अशीही उदाहरणे फार आहेत, जिथे चुका या इतिहास म्हणून लक्षात ठेवण्याची सुद्धा गरज नाही एवढ्या निश्चितीने त्यांना चुकपणा स्पष्ट आहे. मग अशा वेळेस अशा तद्दन चुकीच्या संपादनांना पूर्णपणे वगळण्याची सोय आहे का, जेणे करून ना त्यांची नोंद राहावी, ना इतिहास; कारण त्यामुळे विनाकारण विकि वरील मौल्यवान जागा अडून पडते. जेवढ्या संपादनांना सांभाळत बसायची गरज नाही हे स्पष्ट आहे त्यांना पूर्ण वगळण्याची सुविधा असायला हवी; ती तशी आहे का?

तसेच अतिशय चुकीच्या शीर्षकांचे अप्रस्तूत लेख प्रबंधक वगळू शकतो. परंतु त्यातही मागचा इतिहास व सगळी माहिती प्रणालीवर जतन केलेली असतेच. ती पुनर्स्थापित करता येते. येथेही तोच प्रश्न उद्भवतो की, असे लेख मूळापासून वगळून जागा मोकळी करण्याची सोय आहे का? असल्यास ती कशी वापरावी; व नसल्यास विकि फाउंडेशनला ही अंतर्भूत करण्यासाठी त्यासंदर्भात सूचना द्यावी का?

Mediawiki localization

I have installed mediawiki for the dictionary project at.... http://saraswaticlasses.net/wiki/index.php5

I have found that only about 10% of localization is complete where as here at Marathi Wikipedia it's almost 100%. Is it possible for anyone to submit the translated strings from wikipedia to mediawiki localization project so that the people like me who wants to install mediawiki on their own server can have a complete marathi website?

Browser: Browsing चा इंग्रजीत अर्थ "चाळणे" असा होतो - उदा. "browsing through a book" म्हणजे "पुस्तक चाळणे". Browser चा उपयोग Web ची पाने चाळायला होतो म्हणुन "चाळक" हा शब्द योग्य होईल. पण म्हणुन तो वापरावा का? तसं म्ह्टलं तर Browsing हा एक चाळाच होउन राहिला आहे - म्हणुन Browser ला "चाळा" शब्द जास्त योग्य होइल. WIkipedia stats page show that there are 7 admins whereas Wikipedia:Administrators shows that there are only 5 admins.

The page only lists 5 because that's a manually maintained list.
Apart from the five listed there, श्रीहरी is our latest admin. Also, there is another Admin, Drini, who was appointed an admin without any kind of poll on Marathi Wikipedia. I suspect s/he was appointed by wikimedia stewards.
I will update the list soon.

ई.स. च्या अशुद्ध शीर्षकांच्या लेखांचे वर्ग

नमस्कार विकिपीडियन मंडळी,

कळविण्यास आनंद होत आहे की, मराठी विकिपीडियावर तयार होऊन बसलेले इ.स.च्या वर्षांचे ई.स. अशा अशुद्ध शीर्षकांचे वर्ग आता पूर्णपणे वगळण्यात आलेले आहेत.

तद्वतच इतरही अप्रमाणित (Nonstandard) वर्ग सध्या त्यांचे अस्तित्व सांभाळून आहेत; परंतु त्यांना मार्गी लावायचे काम देखील लगोलग हाती घेत असून लवकरच पूर्णत्वास जाण्याची आशा आहे.

आपल्या सूचनांचे स्वागत आहे.

Inactive Members

Marathi wikipedia as of now is having @ 1700 members. I guess hardly 2% members are active (contribute). I propose that wikipedia membership should come with a expire date ( for non functional members). Non functional period can be 6 months to 1 year. I guess after 6 months the registered members will not even remeber the login ID's or password. I guess to develope marathi wikipedia we need active mebers and not just numbers.

I also feel that members with say 100 / 500 edits should be made permanent members (No expiry).

That's a policy decision that will have to be agreed to/implemented by mediawiki. Wikipedia being an open forum, banning/removing a member for lack of activity seems to go against the grain at first thought. However, implementing this or similar policy for administrators/bureaucrats/other opt-in positions is a good idea and does not need mediawiki approval.
To that effect, I propose that an admin/bureaucrat/etc be removed from his/her position of authority if --
  • There has been no contribution from him/her in 365 days.
People get busy for extended periods of time and 6 months maybe too short a timeframe, also date of last contribution is easy to find.
  • All members agree to a proposal to remove such a member from position of authority. Any member can propose to remove a member from position of authority but at least one of the consenting members must be a current and active admin/bureaucrat.
The vote to remove must be unanimous. Not even one dissent. Of course, if a dissenter fails to respond to valid questions, such dissent can be overridden by existing administrators.
  • The vote must give sufficient notice (30 days from the date of notice) to the inactive member to start contributing.
  • The proposal shall be strictly from removing authority from the member. This process shall, in no case, strip a member of his/her basic membership.

For past few years I have tried to study internet behavioural patterns in regards to contribution by people in constructive activity on internet, and personaly I belive that cancelation of membership would not be of any help.
Besides people take membership for various reasons like interwiki active members interwiki bots will only get discouraged.
As per my observation for creating an active Marathi community on Internet we need minimum 3000 registered members.
Secondly some problems what I have noted about Indian internet culture is
  • percentage wise internet usage by non technical people is very negligible.
  • Spending of time on internet is very low.
  • Spending own money on internet usage is very low
  • People prefer to use internet in office hours because that comes free and does not take their personal time
  • Marathi people do not find any utility of Marathi as language of knowledge
  • Indians are sualy do not insist or take lead to use own script on internet and facilities are not still easily accessible.
  • Search engine searches on Google and other search engines still return useless and unrelated information on querries concerning "Marathi font"
  • So as user Sankalp says to some extent we need to cross fingers with patiance untill some of the social factors do change.

I think we need to take the lead in changing them (If not me who? If not now, when?) Having more content in Marathi will force Google to take notice and re-tool their search engine to better suit Indic languages in general and Marathi in particular. They have no incentive to do it if there's not much to be indexed.

I am a strong believer in If you build it, they will come (for reference, pls see the movie Field of Dreams :-]). The more information is out there, more people tend to look for it. Even on the 'regular' web, that has been the trend. They call it the snow-ball effect. Content increase --> Traffic increase --> More content --> More traffic --> ad infinitum.

That is a basic tenet of Web 2.0 and I know it will work for the Marathi wikipedia.

mahitgar has given interesting observations. what I meant was that may be there are certain limitations for individual users, but when you look at number of users and the number of contributors, the trend is disturbing. All I mean is that there have to be more contribution by registered members by some way or other. This new compition is very interesting and it will certainly motivate ppl/members to contribute.

I agree 100% with abhay's views If you build it, they will come. Those who are contributing should continue there work, but at the same time we need to findd new ways that will make ppl to contribute more.
