अफगाणिस्तान हे इस्लामिक गणराज्य आहे. येथे ९९% नागरिक इस्लामचे अनुयायी आहेत. यापैकी ८०% लोकसंख्या ही सुन्नी इस्लामचे अनुसरण करते[२] तर उर्वरित शिया इस्लामची अनुयायी आहे.[३][४] देशात मुसलमानांशिवाय शिख आणि हिंदू अल्पसंख्याक देखील आहेत.[५][६]

सुन्नी इस्लाम

सुन्नी इस्लाम हा इस्लाम धर्माचा संप्रदाय येथे बहुसंख्य आहे. अफगाणिस्तानच्या एकूण लोकसंख्येच्या ८०% प्रमाण हे सुन्नी मुसलमानांचो आहे.

शिया इस्लाम

अफगाणिस्तानच्या एकूण लोकसंख्येच्या ७% ते २०% शिया मुसलमानांची आहे, त्यांच्यामध्ये अति अल्पसंख्यांक सुन्नी असूनही हजरस प्रामुख्याने आणि अतिमहत्जीजी शिया आहेत, बहुतेक ट्वेल्व्हर शाखा असून काही लहान गट इस्माइलिझम शाखेचे आचरण करतात. अफगाणिस्तानातील तजिकिजचे कझिलबाश परंपरागतपणे शिया आहेत.

आधुनिकतावादी आणि गैर-मतभेद मुसलमान

इस्लामिक आधुनिकतावादी आणि समकालीन युगातील गैर-मतभेद मुस्लिम चळवळीतील सर्वात महत्त्वपूर्ण पुनरुत्थानवादी आणि पुनरुत्पादकांपैकी एक म्हणजे जमाल अदन-दीन अल-अफगानी होय.

शिख आणि हिंदू धर्म

अफगाणिस्तानात शिख धर्म आणि हिंदू धर्म सुमारे ४,००० अफगाण लोक अनुसरतात. शिख आणि हिंदू वेगवेगळ्या शहरांमध्ये राहत आहेत परंतु बहुतेक काबुल, जलालाबाद आणि कंधार येथे आहेत. अफगाणिस्तानच्या संसदेत सिनेटर अवतार सिंग हे एकमेव सिख व्यक्ती आहेत.

बहाई विश्वास

बहाई धर्माचे १९१९ मध्ये अफगाणिस्तानात आगमन झाले, परंतु १८८० पासून बहाई तेथे राहत होते. सध्या अफगाणिस्तानमध्ये अंदाजे ४०० बहाई (अलीकडील अंदाजानुसार) आहेत.

ख्रिश्चन धर्म

बौद्ध धर्म

अफगाणिस्तानात सध्या अत्यल्प बौद्ध अनुयायी आहेत. मात्र पूर्व-इस्लामिक काळात, अफगाणिस्तानात बौद्ध धर्म एक प्रमुख धार्मिक शक्ती होता. हा धर्म व्यापक होता. बौद्ध धर्म प्रथम इ.स.पू. ३०५ मध्ये अफगाणिस्तानात आला तेव्हा ग्रीक सेलेयूकीड साम्राज्याने भारतीय मौर्य साम्राज्याशी गठबंधन केले होते. परिणामी ग्रीक-बौद्ध धर्म ग्रीक-बेक्ट्रियन साम्राज्य (इ.स.पू. २५० - इ.स.पू. १२५) आणि नंतरचे उत्तर-ग्रीक साम्राज्य (इ.स.पू. १८० - इ.स. १०) आधुनिक उत्तर पाकिस्तान आणि अफगाणिस्तानमध्ये वाढला. ग्रीक-बौद्ध धर्म कुशान साम्राज्याच्या कारकीर्दित अधिक उंचीवर पोहोचला, ज्यांनी बॅटरीयन भाषा लिहिण्यासाठी ग्रीक अक्षरे वापरली होती.
