the breast and all the under-parts pale yellowish-pink ; the two central feathers of the tail are entirely black ;all the other feathers are white at the base, and black to-ward the end of the feather, the black portion decreasingon each feather, so that the outer feather on each side retainsbut a single dark spot; all these are tipped with white.The eyelids are black, and the iris of the eye reddish-brown. The female is ferruginous-brown on the upper parts, tingedon the nape and rump with ash-grey ; under parts greyish- 22-i LANIAD.E. white ; the feathers bordered with a dusky semicircular line.The young of the year nearly resemble the female, but someof the feathers on the rump have a narrow dark border. The females and young resemble the young of the Wood-Shrike, which, however, may be distinguished from them bythe white spot on the wing, which the present species nevershows, and which, in all stages, exists in the Wood-Shrike. Very old females nearly resemble the male in plumage.

This beautiful species of Shrike is very rarely seen inEngland, and has not many years been included amongBritish accidental visitants. We have once, only, had thepleasure of seeing it alive in a wild state; this we met within the richly-wooded part of Surrey, between Hatchland,the estate of Holme Sumner, Esq., and Guildford. Thered colour on the upper plumage first attracted our noticeto the bird, which sat within four or five yards of us ona thin branch of an oak, where it remained for nearly aquarter of an hour, and allowed us to have a full anddistinct view of it; it did not appear at all alarmed at ournear approach, but took very little notice of us. Its attitudeand general appearance we have represented in our plate. The Wood-Shrike is found in most parts of Europe,from Sweden southward, and inhabits Africa, where it ap-pears to be more generally known than elsewhere. Werather su
