The Kerala State Film Awards are the most prestigious film awards for a motion picture made in Kerala. The awards have been bestowed by Kerala State Chalachitra Academy since 1998 on behalf of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala, India.

The awards were started in the year 1969. From 1969 to 1997, the awards were managed directly by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. The awardees are decided by an independent jury formed by the academy and the Department of Cultural Affairs, Govt. of Kerala. The jury usually consists of eminent personalities from the film field. For the awards for literature on cinema a fanny separate jury is formed. The academy annually invites films for the award and the jury analyses the films that are submitted before deciding the winners. The awards intends to promote films with artistic values and encourage artistes and technicians. The awards are declared by the Minister for Cultural Affairs and are presented by the Chief Minister of Kerala.

List of Awards

The number of awards varies from year to year, considering the changing scenario of motion picture arts in and out the state of Kerala. The latest number of awards is over 30, while the original number of awards in 1969 was 15.

1. J. C. Daniel Award for outstanding contributions to Malayalam Cinema
2. Award for the Best Film: A cash award of Rs.100,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the producer. A cash award of Rs.40,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the Director
3. Award for the Second Best Film: A cash award of Rs.60,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the producer. A cash award of Rs.30,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the Director
4. Award for Excellence in Direction : A cash award of Rs.50,000/-, a replica and a certificate
5. Award for the best actor of the year: A cash award of Rs.30,000/-, a replica and a certificate
6. Award for the best actress of the year: A cash award of Rs.30,000/-, a replica and a certificate
7. Award for the second best actor of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
8. Award for the second best actress of the year:A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
9. Award for the best child artiste of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
10. Award for the best story writer of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
11. Award for the best Script Writer: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
12. Award for Excellence in Cinematography: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
13. Award for the best Lyricist of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
14. Award for the best music director(songs): A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
15. Award for the best music director (background): A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
16. Award for the best male play-back singer of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
17. Award for the best female playback singer of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
18. Award for the best film editor of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
19. Award for the best art director of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
20. Award for the best sound recordist of the year: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
21. Award for the best processing laboratory: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
22. Award for the best makeup man: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
23. Award for the best costume designer: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
24. Award for the best dubbing artiste of the year: A cash award of Rs.7,500/-, a replica and a certificate each
25. Best Choreographer: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
26. Best film with popular appeal and aesthetic value: To the producer and director
27. Best Children's Film: To the producer and director
28. Best Debut Director
29. Special Jury Award: A cash award of Rs.30,000/-, a replica and a certificate
30. Best Documentary: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the producer. A cash award of Rs.9,000/-, a replica and a certificate to the Director
31. Best Book on cinema: A cash award of Rs.15,000/-, a replica and a certificate
32. Best Article on Cinema: A cash award of Rs.8,000/-,a replica and a certificate
